Problem :

The main problem addressed in this workshop was the lack of practical skills in data analysis among students, especially in handling statistical tools like SPSS and SmartPLS 4 for academic research. Many students, including myself initially, found it difficult to translate theoretical research concepts into actual data analysis, such as running regressions, interpreting outputs, and building structural models.

This gap often creates challenges when working on thesis or research projects, where accurate data analysis is essential for valid conclusions. The workshop aimed to solve this issue by providing practical, hands-on training.

Solution :

The solution was an interactive, practice-oriented learning approach where we were guided step by step through SPSS and SmartPLS 4. I learned how to input and clean data, perform descriptive and inferential statistical analysis in SPSS, and build structural equation models in SmartPLS.

The facilitators demonstrated real research examples, which helped connect theory with practice. By actively following along and practicing on sample datasets, I was able to understand how to properly analyze data and interpret results for academic research.

Challenge :

The biggest challenge was dealing with the complexity of statistical tools and understanding the logic behind the outputs rather than just the steps. At first, interpreting SPSS results like regression tables, significance values, and reliability tests was confusing. In SmartPLS 4, building measurement and structural models, ensuring validity (AVE, CR), and understanding path coefficients required deep concentration and analytical thinking.

Another challenge was keeping up with the fast-paced hands-on session while ensuring that every step was correctly executed without missing important details. Managing technical errors, software navigation issues, and real-time learning pressure made the experience demanding but highly valuable.

Summary :

Overall, the SPSS and SmartPLS 4 workshop at the Department of Marketing, GSTU was a highly enriching academic experience. It significantly improved my understanding of data analysis and research methodology. The workshop helped me bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, especially in using statistical tools for academic research. It also strengthened my confidence in handling research projects more independently and accurately, making it a valuable step in my academic and professional development.
